A Perth eyesore, which remained only partially built for years and was being occupied by squatters, has finally been demolished.
Pankaj and Padhika Oswal's $70 million partially built mansion, dubbed 'Taj on Swan' by locals, has finally been demolished. The house was the subject of a long-running battle between the owners and the council, which reached a conclusion on Monday after the Oswals failed to act on orders by the State Administrative Tribunal to demolish the building.
Construction of the home, originally said to be worth $70 million, was abandoned when the Oswals left Australia in December 2010. The couple's ammonia business, Burrup Holdings, had collapsed.
The original plans for the home were nothing short of palatial. Seven domes, a temple, a gym, swimming pool and enough parking for 17 cars were slated for the home. The house was located in the blue-chip suburb of Peppermint Grove.
Perth agents Vivien Yap of LJ Hooker and William Porteous have been appointed by the Oswals to sell the 6,600sqm lot, which is said to be worth approximately $30 million. The property is for sale by expression of interest.
