"A private enclosure by the ocean, filled with natural light: with simple, expansive and flexible spaces."
Villa Marittima, a minimalist Mornington Peninsula home with no stairs, has won the People's Choice award at the 2015 National Architecture Awards. Designed by Robin Williams Architect, the St Andrews Beach home beat 10 other residential designs that were in the running for the award.
Robin Williams Architect describes the home as "A private enclosure by the ocean, filled with natural light: with simple, expansive and flexible spaces." The striking home is wrapped in walls of translucent polycarbonate which insulate the villa and softly change color.
The home also won the Residential Architecture Award – Houses (New) at the 2015 Victorian Architecture Awards and also received a commendation at the 2015 Houses Awards for the New House over 200 m² category.
"To view Villa Marittima simply as a meticulously detailed example of minimalist architecture would be an incomplete interpretation," said the 2015 Victorian Architecture Awards jury. "This home presents a memorable series of living experiences which arise from unique architectural responses to the site, brief and the surrounding landscape."
All the projects shortlisted by the national jury for the Residential Architecture – Houses (New) and Residential Architecture – Houses (Alterations and Additions) categories were eligible for the People’s Choice Award. The National Architecture Awards are being held tonight in Brisbane.
