Nicci Green is founder and designer at Articolo Architectural Lighting. Based in Melbourne, Nicci sells her beautiful products all over the world. She thinks of her designs as light sculptures, that give a room soul and create a unique atmosphere.
The concept for Nicci Green architectural lighting business came to her at the Maison Objet Trade Fair in Paris, when the designer placed one of her glass vases upside down over her hand - a 'light bulb' moment you could say.
How did you get into lighting design?
We have a sister company Bribe International that specializes in glassware. We were showing at the Maison Objet Trade Fair in Paris and I had an irreverent moment where I placed a large vase upside down over my hand, held it up, and stated ‘lets get into lighting’.
It was in fact a ‘light bulb’ moment and we returned to Australia and designed our first light the Lumi table lamp referencing a vessel within a vessel turned ‘upside down’. We took it back to Paris - Maison Objet the following year and it attracted a lot attention and interest. That was start of this wonderful journey into decorative lighting.
Could you tell us about an interesting project you’ve worked on recently?
It is a pretty exciting time. We were asked by Elenberg Fraser a leading Melbourne based Architectural Firm to custom design lighting exclusively for a project they are working on ‘Rockley Gardens’. It is located on the edge of a superb leafy park in bustling South Yarra. This is an elevated residential apartment project where every detail has been considered including bespoke custom lighting. I viewed the display suite last week and it is incredible. Our lighting looks amazing and is complimented beautifully by a commissioned Jamie North sculpture.
What do you love most about your job?
I absolutely love designing. I can’t help myself or hold myself back. Lighting design is particularly unique... it is not just the intrinsic beauty of the form that needs to be considered, nor just the function which becomes complex when selling into different countries with different compliance laws, but it provides a third dimension where there is the opportunity for ‘shadow play’ as I like to call it.
Many of our lights have superb detailing in the glass so when lit they cast striations, patterns and shadows on the walls which in turn gives the environment they are placed within ‘soul’.
Can you give our readers your top tip for lighting a room?
Decorative lighting gives a room personality and soul. Down lights (for task lighting) coupled with decorative lighting, pendants, wall sconces, table and floor lamps dress a room.
I like to think our lighting is ceiling or wall jewellery or light sculptures. Lighting should be dimmable to provide different moods.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Do what you love... because you will be successful at it and enjoy everyday. You wont resent the hard work and sacrifices.
Where do you live now, and what’s your dream home, anywhere in the world?
I live in Melbourne inner city. My dream is 6 months Italy, 6 months Melbourne. One day...
